Historical mortars are mortars of old constructions, constructions that go back to past ages, where certain cities held relative importance, but this importance has often been lost in the course of time. With the advancement of time and through the actions imposed by the same to the structures, the buildings end up suffering damages, some of them even of a serious nature, that when they are not healed with the necessary necessary interventions, can lead to the edification to the ruin, the history of a people, city or region. However, if these interventions do not use adequate materials, they end up further damaging the structure rather than preserving them. In the case of coating mortars, it is denoted the fact that they are the ones that suffer most in a building, since it is responsible for protecting the masonry from the action of external agents that cause numerous damage to it. In order to perform interventions when necessary in old buildings, the alternative of proposing mortar characterization methods arises, so that through tests it is possible to know important characteristics of the compound so that it can be remade and used in these interventions, thus guaranteeing aspects aesthetic, mechanical and physical. The objective of this work is to characterize mortars of a building located in the city of Jardim de Piranhas / RN dating from 1951. Characterization techniques such as acid etching, absorption test and particle size distribution were used. From this it was possible to know the characteristics of the material used in the manufacture of the mortar, such as particle size distribution, absorption rate, how to know the proportions of materials used in the trace.
