Resumo

The use of cisterns to store water during non-precipitation months helps to minimize the quantity problem, but potability can often be inadequate. Thus, the present study aimed to carry out a study of the water quality of cisterns in the rural area of the city of Caraúbas-RN. Due to the great contact with factors that provide microbiological and physico-chemical problems, evaluating and / or quantifying the potability studies is necessary. Therefore, this work evaluates the cistern waters in the Glênio Sá settlement, as well as its adequacy regarding the standards of quality and identity stipulated by Brazilian legislation. The use of questionnaire and observations of conditions and care practiced by the owners was also employed. The water samples collected at the Glênio Sá Settlement were transported to the laboratory of applied chemistry at UFERSA - Caraúbas, where they were analyzed and compared to the quality standards required by law. Samples were collected from seven different cisterns (1 car-kite, 4 rainwater, 1 weir water, 1 well water) and the tests were conducted with a minimum of three replicates. In the analysis that differentiated more from the maximum values defined in legislation was the well water sample. For cisterns with rainwater only a good quality was observed for physico-chemical surfaces. However, all samples showed total coliform colonies and only C3 did not present E. coli colony.
