Resumo

The use of wastewater in agricultural activities is growing every year, especially where water scarcity is evident. Studies show that the use of these waters can improve the utilization of the water and nutritional potential of the crops in an economically viable and environmentally sustainable way. However, further studies are necessary for subsidizing the use of inferior quality water in sunflower cultivation in a rational and economic way. Thus, the present work was carried out in the municipality of Mossoró, RN, Brazil with the objective of quantifying growth and production of three cultivars of ornamental sunflower fertirrigated with aquaculture effluent, raw or diluted in tap water. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse during the period from February to August 2017, utilizing a completely randomized experimental design, in a 5 x 3 factorial scheme with 4 replications, totaling 60 experimental units. The treatments were composed by the following factors: dilutions of waste water in tap water from the public supply system (tap water - control, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of effluent), and cultivars of ornamental sunflower (Bonito de Outono Sortido, Sol Vermelho and Sol Noturno). The increase in the proportion of fish effluent caused decrease of fresh mass of shoots of ornamental sunflower, while the effect on plant height was dependent of the cultivar considered. The proportion of fish effluent did not influence characteristics of sunflower flowers, but they varied among cultivars. The contents of macronutrients and micronutrients in the leaf tissue of ornamental sunflower were influenced by the proportion of fish effluent, although contents of nitrogen, phosphorus and zinc varied among cultivars. Besides the contribution from the reuse of the effluent from fish farming to minimize the waste of water, the production of ornamental sunflower in consortium with fish farming can be a promising alternative for increasing the financial income of family farming
