Abstract
This thesis sets out to comprehend the process undertaken by Restorative Justice in order to embed itself in Rio Grande do Norte as well as the manners in which it manifests itself in said state. The objective of this work is to understand the process of official entry of Restorative Justice in the Brazilian State, to examine the projects involving Restorative Justice in Rio Grande do Norte and to critically analyze the experiences of Restorative Justice in the state from the perspective of those responsible for the respective initiatives. To that end, this research made use of questionnaires and interviews so as to survey professionals of the field who are applying or have applied Restorative Justice in the state, and how this implementation is occurring or has occurred. Firstly the history of the Restorative Justice were reviewed, followed by an analysis of how it has been institutionalized in Brazil. The author’s motivations for writing on the issue was discussed as well, preceding a historical survey of Restorative Justice in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The last chapter is dedicated to introducing the projects verified by the research and the professionals in charge of each project. Lastly, we contemplate the professionals’ answers to each of the questions with a view to making critical commentary on each response. In the end, concluded that the projects in the state are still very focused on the sphere of cases involving adolescents in conflict with the law and school conflicts, however, the author believes that this because the experiences are initial, and that over time will cover other types of conflicts.
