dc.description.abstract2The physiology of plant response to water stress is highly complex and involves deleterious and/or adaptive changes. Soil flooding is the main environmental stress that causes O2 deprivation in plant roots. The adaptation or not of plants to soils with excess water is defined based on their ability to develop mechanisms to overcome the conditions. When subjected to flooding, some plants can produce morphological and physiological changes to better adapt to the environment and diffuse oxygen. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the morphological and physiological aspects of soybean genotypes subjected to soil flooding in the vegetative and reproductive phases. The design adopted was completely randomized (DIC) with 5 replications, in a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement, with three soybean genotypes: tolerant, sensitive and cv. commercial; and three water treatment conditions: soil flooding for 10 days in the vegetative period + 10 days in the reproductive period; soil flooding for 10 days only in the reproductive period, and the control treatment, where the soil was maintained at 70% of CC throughout the plant cycle. During the plant cycle, three evaluations were carried out regarding chlorophyll a fluorescence, photosynthesis and gas exchange: after the flooding of the vegetative period (V2); after the flood of the reproductive period (R2) and ten days after the drainage of the flood water (recovery). At the end of the experiment, the relative water content, membrane damage, chlorophyll a, b, total and carotenoid contents, accumulation and allocation of dry mass in plant organs were evaluated. The tolerant and sensitive genotypes suffered a reduction in the photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance when submitted to water stress in the reproductive phase. However, under stress in the vegetative phase, only the same genotypes reduced the current quantum efficiency and the electron transport rate and did not show recovery for these variables. There was a reduction in the relative water content for the sensitive and tolerant genotypes in the vegetative/reproductive and in the reproductive, while for the local there was no difference. Cell membranes show greater damage to sensitive membranes in the vegetative/reproductive period and to sensitive and local membranes in the reproductive period. The tolerant genotype showed no reduction in chlorophyll a, b and total content, while the sensitive and local genotypes were strongly affected. Dry mass in leaves and roots were lower for the tolerant and sensitive to being subjected to stress in the R2 stage of soybean and for grain production, the three genotypes were affected both in the vegetative/reproductive phase and only in the reproductive phase. It was observed for the tolerant, sensitive and local, lower investment of biomass for grain production and greater allocation of dry mass in the stem. For the root, which is the plant organ in direct contact with water, only the sensitive genotype showed a smaller increase. Thus, the tolerant and sensitive genotypes are more susceptible to stress, while the local one is more adapted and tolerant, since it has mechanisms to overcome the environment
