| dc.description.abstract2 | The growing energy demand and environmental concerns related to the use of fossil fuels have driven the transition to renewable sources. In this context, solar thermal energy, specifically Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants, emerges as a promising alternative for diversifying the energy matrix, especially when combined with Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems. This study aims to assess the technical and economic advantages of a CSP plant in Mossoró/RN, in order to identify the most efficient and feasible configuration through the analysis of different sensible thermal storage arrangements and heat transfer fluids in the solar field and storage system. Simulations also included the city of Bom Jesus da Lapa/BA, with the goal of comparing performance between regions with different levels of direct normal irradiance (DNI). Four main configurations were considered: (i) CSP using synthetic oil as heat transfer fluid (HTF) and molten salt as thermal storage medium; (ii) CSP using molten salt as both HTF and thermal storage medium; (iii) CSP without thermal storage, using synthetic oil as HTF; and (iv) CSP without thermal storage, using molten salt as HTF. The adopted methodology was based on simulations performed using the System Advisor Model (SAM) software, developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), to analyze the performance of the plants under different scenarios. The evaluated parameters included the levelized cost of energy (LCOE), energy efficiency, and capacity factor (CF). The results indicate that configurations with thermal storage offer greater competitiveness and economic viability by reducing LCOE and increasing annual energy production. The configuration with molten salt as both HTF and TES (plant ii) showed the best performance, with the lowest LCOE (23.44 US$ ¢/kWh in Bom Jesus da Lapa and 24.64 US$ ¢/kWh in Mossoró) and the highest annual production (up to 435.4 GWh in Bom Jesus da Lapa), reaching a CF of 49.7%. Despite the high initial investment, the savings provided by higher energy efficiency offset the additional costs. In contrast, configurations without thermal storage demonstrated lower efficiency and economic feasibility, with higher LCOEs (29–34 US$ ¢/kWh) and up to 15% reduction in energy production. Thus, it is understood that the use of thermal storage systems is essential to make CSP technology more competitive in Brazil, ensuring greater flexibility and reliability in power generation. Moreover, the use of a single heat transfer fluid in both the solar field and thermal storage system especially when using molten salt enables greater thermal efficiency and reduction in operational costs. These results reinforce the importance of developing and implementing CSP plants in the country, contributing to the diversification of the energy matrix and promoting a more sustainable energy system. | |
