| dc.description.abstract2 | This study investigated the acoustic analysis of the production of the -ed morpheme by Potiguar learners of English, examining its production from the perspective of speech rate. The general objective of the study was to analyze the effect of speech rate on the production of the English -ed morpheme by Potiguar learners. The research was guided by the following research question: What is the effect of speech rate on the production of the English -ed morpheme by Potiguar learners? The hypothesis assumed that each learner presents an individual developmental pattern in the acquisition of the -ed morpheme, with some learners showing greater ease in producing it at higher speech rates, while others experience greater difficulty. The -ed morpheme marks regular past tense in English and presents three realizations, classified as [t], [d], and [ɪd]. Brazilian Portuguese speakers tend to experience difficulties in producing this morpheme due to orthographic interference from Portuguese and challenges related to the distinction between voiced and voiceless sounds. This is a quantitative and experimental study in which the production of the -ed morpheme was analyzed through sentence-reading tasks, as well as acoustic and statistical analyses. The results revealed a high level of difficulty in the production of the -ed morpheme at both normal and fast speech rates. It was also found that speech rate did not have a significant effect on the development of the -ed morpheme, thus refuting the study’s hypothesis. Additionally, the results showed that the [t] and [d] realizations were the most problematic, being frequently replaced by non-equivalent morphemes. | |
