Abstract
Traffic has become an issue increasingly discussed not only by the competent authorities, but also by society. Brazil, for example, is between the most violent traffics in the world, according to the World Health Organization, occupying the fifth place in the number of deaths from traffic accidents. The use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) can represent an important advance in the analysis of geospatial data, providing greater speed in the correlation of several variables in a few clicks, the creation of thematic maps of interest to the traffic authorities and so on. The use of these tools, therefore, streamlines and optimizes the allocation of resources where they are really needed. This way, this research aims to employ such tools of analysis and optimization, to determine at what time of the day and at which points in the city of Mossoró, in Rio Grande do Norte, traffic accidents are more frequent. The data obtained in a partnership with the City of Mossoró through its Urban Mobility Secretariat and the State Road Police District (2nd DPRE) was inserted in a GIS software, where they was processed. A heat map, with a radius of 30 meters, was then created for each time band, in order to delimit the points with more concentrated occurrences, allowing the creation of ranking with both more recurrences and more accidents.
