dc.description.abstract2Agro-industrial waste that is unusable for human consumption can be used to feed ruminants, aiming at maximum utilization of the production chain and reduction of production costs. However, diets with high levels of non-fibrous carbohydrates can cause changes in the ruminal environment. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the histomorphological changes in the rumen, small and large intestines and liver of lambs fed silage made from canarana erecta-lisa grass (Echinochloa pyramidalis), harvested at 90 days, associated with melon waste fruit (FRM) (Cucumis melo) at increasing levels: 0, 7, 14 and 21 g/kg of DM, with a roughage:concentrate ratio of 30:70, based on natural matter. Twenty-eight uncastrated lambs, with no defined racial standard, approximately five months of age and an average initial body weight of 23.7 ± 1.0 kg, were used. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sent for commercial slaughter. After evisceration, fragments of the rumen, small and large intestines, and liver were collected and processed for histological analysis. The results showed that the inclusion of FRM in canarana grass silage had an effect on the intake of dry matter (P = 0.012), crude protein (P = 0.0002), neutral detergent fiber (P = 0.0211), and non-fibrous carbohydrates (P = 0.0235), although total weight gain (TWG) was not affected (P > 0.05). The height of the ruminal papillae was influenced (P = 0.0004), with the highest values observed in animals fed silage containing 7% FRM (2,745.76 μm), while the width of the ruminal papillae decreased (P = 0.0002) with increasing FRM. The absorptive surface of the rumen was affected (P = 0.0065) mainly at the 7% inclusion level (1,190,310.98 μm), while the thickness of the ruminal muscle layer increased (P < 0.0001), being greater with 21% FRM (1,208.58 μm). The height of the villi of the small intestine and the superficial enterocyte layer of the large intestine increased when FRM was added up to the level of 14%. In the small intestine, the height of the villi was influenced (P < 0.001), presenting 339.45 μm in animals fed silage containing 14% FRM. The depth of the crypts was also affected (P = 0.002), presenting 248.30 μm at the level of 21% FRM, as well as the villi/crypt ratio (P = 0.0067) with 1.25 μm, related to the lower depth of crypts observed at this level (248.30 μm). In the large intestine, both the height of the superficial enterocyte layer and the depth of the crypts were influenced (P = 0.0036 and P = 0.0002, respectively), with the highest means observed at 14% FRM (316.92 μm and 287.68 μm, respectively). The inclusion of FRM in the diet of lambs induced histopathological changes in the liver, mainly at the level of 21% FRM inclusion, which presented inflammation (80%/++) and hydropic degeneration (40%/++). Other liver lesions, such as necrosis and perivascular cuffing, were observed at a lower frequency and intensity. The amount of hepatic glycogen decreased with the increase in FRM inclusion by 77.92%, being significant at the levels of 14% (18.11%) and 21% (7.87%). At moderate levels (7 to 14%), the inclusion of FRM in the diet of lambs promotes beneficial morphological changes in organs of the digestive system, improving the absorptive and digestive capacity of the animals. However, high levels (21%) induce hepatic inflammatory responses and reduce glycogen reserves, which can negatively impact hepatic metabolism. Therefore, the inclusion of FRM must be carried out in a balanced manner, considering its benefits for the rumen and intestines and its possible adverse effects on the liver.
