| dc.description.abstract2 | Donkeys (Equus asininos) are animals that stand out for their resistance and adaptability, being used as a means of transport and in agricultural work. Individuals involved in these environments are subject to traumatic accidents that can result in significant blood loss. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical response of donkeys to blood transfusion after an acute loss of 30% of total blood volume. For this purpose, 6 animals of the northeastern donkey breed were used, males, adults (6 to 13 years old), healthy, weighing 110-130 kg. The animals were taken to the Veterinary Internal Medicine Laboratory (LABMIV) and physically contained in the containment trunk. The blood volume was then removed with the aid of a 14G catheter, introduced into the jugular vein with the animal in the station. The blood was stored in blood bags, whose volumes were measured using an analytical balance. Then, the following physiological parameters were evaluated: respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), rectal temperature (T), mucosal color and capillary filling time (TPC), in addition to the hematological parameter hematocrit (Ht). The following experimental times were adopted: T0 before anemia induction and T6 six hours after induction, and after transfusion, T1t (one hour after transfusion), T6t, T12t, T24t, T48t, T72t and T8D (eight days after transfusion ), T16D, T24D and T32D. In the results, we observed that in HR at T6 there was a significant difference in relation to T0 with an increase from 42 ± 3.7 to 51 ± 4.5 bpm, but this does not differ from the others. In RR, an increase in T6 (46.2 ± 5.0 min) was observed in relation to T0 (26.0 ± 3.3 min) and T1t (35.0 ± 5.3 min), which differed from each other. Only in T6t was stabilization of this parameter observed. In TPC, an increase was noted in T6 (3.0 ± 0.8 sec) in relation to T0 (1.7 ± 0.5 sec), which normalized from T1t (1.8 ± 0.3 sec). The RT, at T0, was 37.4ºC, not statistically different in the following times. Regarding Ht, a decrease was observed in T6 (23 ± 2.3%), which was similar only to T1t (27 ± 3.3%), and stabilized in T6t (30 ± 3.0%), being similar to T0 . In this way, it was evident that the donkeys showed a good response to whole blood transfusion, considering that the parameters were stabilized quickly and without the observation of adverse reactions. It is concluded that blood transfusion of whole blood in donkeys after loss of 30% of blood volume was efficient, thus being a viable alternative for animals that may suffer after significant blood loss. | |
