Abstract
Seeing the opportunity on engineering students, the Society of Mobility Engineers focuses attention on promoting a project to develop a characteristic off-road vehicle named BAJA. The project counts with engineers that work in the industry to design and judge tests in the most varied styles, creating regional, national and global competition. The objective of this work is to develop and apply fundamental steps for dimensioning the structural calculus of this vehicle with a focus on its chassis to reach the initial project assumptions of mass and safety factor. This component was chosen because the chassis incorporates all coupling of all other sectors of a vehicle and has immense involvement in the safety for the pilot. The methodology is to apply a step by step project and its decision making, adopting methods and validating them to fulfill initial project requirements. It was made the modeling of the problem and proposed a critical situation as initial for chassis dimensioning: simulation of a frontal impact between two BAJA vehicles. After the narrative of the decision-making, a mass was obtained that was 3% higher than initially proposed and less than 1% of a safety factor above the proposed one, which was considered as a satisfactory result when compared to the result numbers obtained. The opportunities of acting in decision making generating knowledge of the points for improvement in the next project are also good results.
