| dc.description.abstract2 | Biological invasions represent one of the main factors associated with the loss of aquatic biodiversity in riverine ecosystems. In this context, the present study aims to investigate the factors that influence the distribution and abundance of the invasive mollusk Melanoides tuberculata in intermittent streams of the Brazilian semi-arid region. We hypothesize that a combination of environmental filtering and dispersal limitation determines the distribution and abundance of M. tuberculata. The research was conducted at 34 sites in the Apodi-Mossoró river basin, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, where limnological, sedimentological, and morphometric parameters were measured. For data analysis, three sets of variables were considered: abiotic, such as turbidity, pH, clay content, channel morphometry, and sediment characteristics; biotic, expressed by macroinvertebrate richness; and spatial, based on fluvial distances and neighborhood structure. Linear models were used to assess the relationships between the variable sets and the abundance of M. tuberculata, and variance partitioning was applied to determine the relative contribution of the different sets of variables. We observed that the invasive mollusk was present in 44% of the studied sites. The species was recorded in environments with different types of anthropogenic activity, being more prevalent in areas with intense human influence. The total abundance of the mollusk was 2,006 individuals, with an average of 59 individuals. Abundance across sites ranged from 1 to 387 individuals, representing 71% of the community at the site with the highest abundance. The linear models indicated that the abiotic variables turbidity, pH, and channel width were positively associated with mollusk abundance, while clay content was negatively associated. Variance partitioning indicated that pure abiotic factors explained 20% of the species' abundance, while spatial factors explained only 4%, and biotic variables had no significant influence. The lack of significant correlation with species richness suggests low biotic resistance in the studied streams. The results indicate that degraded environmental conditions favor the population growth of M. tuberculata, highlighting the importance of environmental management strategies to contain its spread. Furthermore, our study provides evidence that environmental filtering acts as the main regulatory mechanism of M. tuberculata distribution and abundance in intermittent streams of the Brazilian semi-arid region. | |
