| dc.description.abstract2 | The COVID-19 pandemic has brought countless uncertainties, fears and anxieties into people's lives. The new academic routine in the face of the pandemic through increased exposure to screens and the use of previously unknown technologies, has triggered a series of disorders such as anxiety and depression in this public, in this sense we evaluated some mental health variables before and during the pandemic. The study investigated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of students and teachers at the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), with a focus on the transition to emergency remote teaching. An online questionnaire via Google Forms was used to collect data on changes in habits and behaviors during the pandemic, as well as self-assessment of mental health using the SelfReporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). 296 individuals took part in the study, 219 students and 77 teachers. The data was collected from September 2020 to May 2021. Bivariate analysis was used to correlate the variables using the chi-square test and McNemar's test with statistical significance at 5% (p < 0.05), with the aid of JASP. The data was expressed in mean and standard deviation values as well as simple frequency and percentage using another statistical program, SPSS (Statistical Page For Social Sciences) version 23.0, using the main statistical tests as Shapiro-Wilk, Levene's homoscedasticity, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis, and Fisher's exact. The results revealed that both students and teachers experienced significant negative impacts on their mental health during the pandemic period. Analysis of the SRQ-20 data indicated that students were more affected than teachers in several of the categories assessed, showing a significant worsening in 15 of the 20 items investigated, while teachers showed a worsening in seven of the 20 items investigated. The predominant age group among students was 18 to 24 years (58%), while among teachers it was 35 to 44 years (40.3%). As for gender in the sample collected, there was a predominance of female students (62.6%) and male teachers (62.3%). With regard to race, the majority of students said they were brown (43.4%) and the majority of teachers said they were white (64.9%). As for marital status, the majority of students were single (79.9%) and the majority of teachers were married (58.4%). Additionally, both students and teachers sought coping measures during the pandemic period, 76.7% of respondents reported adopting new habits and 74.3% of them increased the frequency of an existing habit, where 25% of people responded to increase the habit of studying, followed by visual entertainment with 24%, as a way of coping during the pandemic. Among those who did not adopt new habits, only students showed a significant p-value indicating an increase. These findings highlight the significant adaptations in the behaviors and habits of students and teachers during the pandemic. And they reinforce the need for urgent interventions to promote mental health in the academic community, with a view to mitigating the ongoing negative impacts of the pandemic and supporting psychological well-being in the educational environment. | |
