Resumo

The plastic deformation that a material exhibits when machined varies according to different alloying elements or heat treatments that it is subjected to. The aim of the present work was to identify machining parameters that would allow the AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel to be machined without any chip plastification, or with the least occurrence of the chip, that is to say with less or no plastic deformation during the process of machining. To evaluate the variations in the processes involved in the chip formation, machining tests were performed from the combination of parameters such as cutting speed, feed speed and depth of cut with a coated carbide tool. After that, the obtained chips were classified and subsequently passed through the metallography process for microstructural analysis under an optical microscope. The machining tool was analyzed through a scanning electron microscope to identify the wear mechanisms that the cutting tool suffered through the techniques of backscattered secondary electrons and electrons. To determine the surface finish of the machined part, it was analyzed with a roughness meter. From these analyzes it was possible to conclude that the parameter that obtained the best results of surface finish quality had the highest cutting speed, intermediate feed speed and depth of cut, generating the minimum of plastification in the chip observed in the metallography
