| dc.description.abstract2 | Tuna fishing is among the main sources of economic growth and in the Equatorial Atlantic, the capture of species such as yellowfin tuna has been driven by the growing global demand for high value-added fisheries products. This research aimed to analyze the impacts of sea surface temperature (SST) and moonlight index (MI) on the distribution and relative abundance of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). Specifically, to analyze the influence of these environmental factors (sea surface temperature and moonlight index) on its distribution and abundance; to identify areas of greater abundance and to standardize CPUEs, with application to the referred species. The analysis of the impacts related to (SST) and moonlight index on the distribution and relative abundance of yellowfin tuna was based on catch and fishing effort data from the Brazilian longline fleet between 10ºN - 10ºS and 25º- 40ºW, in the Western Portion of the Atlantic Ocean. Data on releases, fishing area, effort and catch were obtained from the onboard maps of vessels based in Brazil, with catches intended for tuna. The CPUE was used as an index of relative abundance, in number of individuals, per 1000 years. The oceanographic variables were collected by satellite sensors, using time series. Four variables were used. The variables related to fishing effort, referring to the number of years used per release, as well as those related to space and time, such as latitude - LAT, longitude - LON, year and month were obtained from the Vessels' Logbooks, in 1ºx1º squares, by day, month, quarter and year. The (TSM) was obtained from the “Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center” of the “Jet Propulsion Laboratory”/NASA, “Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab/ocean data from the IRI/ARCS/Ocean assimilation” and “Centre ERS d'Archivage et de Traitement (CERSAT)” of (IFREMER). The lunar illumination index – ILL, was obtained from the R package LUNAR. To analyze the relationship between environmental and operational factors on catches (CPUE), Generalized Additive Models (GAMMs) were used and four models were developed. Among them, the lowest RMSE value (6.51) was observed in the model with space-time structuring. Regarding the effect of SST on the CPUE of yellowfin tuna, the results showed that the species tends to be captured more frequently between 26 and 27 ºC, with the number of individuals decreasing from 27 ºC and returning to previous capture rates from 28.5 ºC. Regarding the effect of the lunar illumination index (LI) on the CPUE, the results obtained showed that the highest CPUEs occurred in the new moon phase and in the crescent phase of the moon, between 0.5 and 0.8, with the CPUE values decreasing as the full moon moved (1.0). Regarding distribution, the results indicated that the areas of greatest abundance of the species were located in the West Equatorial region of the Atlantic Ocean, during the 12 months of the year, with most areas located between 5°S-10ºN/25ºW-40ºW, between the months of January (01) to May (05). The abundance areas decreased continuously between 5ºS-10ºN/25ºW-35ºW from June (06) to December (12). These areas were concentrated between 0º-10N/35ºW-45ºW during these months. It can be concluded that the sea surface temperature and the moonlight index play a fundamental role in the distribution and abundance of yellowfin tuna in the Western Equatorial Atlantic; Areas with more suitable temperatures (between 26 and 27 ºC) concentrate a greater number of individuals, increasing their local abundance; Moonlight influences the nocturnal behavior of these fish, with the highest CPUEs occurring during the new moon phase and the waxing moon phase; The areas with the highest concentration of yellowfin tuna occur in the Western Equatorial region of the Atlantic Ocean, during the 12 months of the year, with the majority of them located between 5°S-10ºN/25ºW-40ºW, in the months of January to May (05), where the species is most frequently found. | |
