Mulheres negras na ciência: perspectiva de discentes e egressas da habilitação em ciências da natureza da licenciatura em educação do campo da UFERSA

This essay has originated from research and experiences which occurred during the licentiate graduation in countryside education (LEDOC) at UFERSA, where questions regarding black women invisibility in the Brazilian scientific community, particularly when it comes to natural sciences and how this drives more black women away from these careers. Motivated by the low prevalence of black women in natural sciences at LEDOC/UFERSA, this work aims at identifying and describing the process of permanence of black women on natural science courses at LEDOC/UFERSA. From a brief historical outline of the education of black people in Brazil, its inequities, racism and overall prejudice involved in this background since colonial times up to today, as well as disserting on the exploitation derived from the capitalist system, a link is built to the discussion of black women’s education and how the gap is deepened in university and college education, as well as science and research in universities. As theoretical references, PINHEIRO (2019), VARGAS (2018), GARCIA (2011), SILVA (2018) and HENRIQUES (2018) were brought up as central authors. With the realisation of this work, we expect to improve the visibility of black women in the natural sciences, building upon work already developed in this area, which is still lacking in volume.
