| dc.description.abstract2 | How do the images present in the Multiverso: Ciências Humanas Collection construct representations and memories of Indigenous peoples in the teachable History of Brazil? This research aims to understand the history taught regarding Indigenous themes through the images found in the aforementioned collection, within the PNLD 2021, from the theoretical-methodological perspective of Representation and Memory. Regarding the specific objectives, we selected: (a) to construct the State of Knowledge concerning Indigenous themes addressed in History textbooks, highlighting their specificities and advances; (b) to discuss conceptual perspectives on the History textbook, the theory of Representation, and Memory from a plural spectrum in which the terms Signs and Taught History are interrelated; (c) to analyze the imagetic contents related to Indigenous themes present in the Multiverso Collection, published by FTD (PNLD 2021), based on thematic excerpts concerning culture, enslavement, social organization, labor, religion, and daily life, in dialogue with Brazilian Indigenous writing. The study adopts a qualitative approach and is classified as research guided by the investigative method of history. It is grounded in procedures of the State of Knowledge, aiming to map stricto sensu production and to historicize the trajectory of theses and dissertations within Brazilian graduate studies addressing the investigated theme and/or related topics. Documentary analysis was employed as a data production technique, and semiotic analysis was used to examine the data. Our theoretical framework is anchored in the regime of representation and memory and is structured around three complementary axes: (a) the notion of representation based on the tensions and connections among cultural history, sociology of culture, and semiotics; (b) the History textbook analyzed from the epistemic critique of Brazilian Indigenous decoloniality, the New Indigenous History, and interculturality in relation to the collection’s representations; and (c) the use of memory as an analytical category for images concerning Amerindian peoples. Additionally, we engage in dialogue with contemporary Indigenous intellectual production, especially Munduruku (2009), Krenak (2019), and Kopenawa (2015), aiming to propose alternative images of Indigenous peoples in Brazil and to move beyond a merely denunciatory critique of the analyzed collection. From this perspective, we conceive, both heuristically and semiotically, the image as a sociocultural construct that manifests in an articulated manner at the cognitive level of the interpretant, in the materiality of the object, and in the sign dimension of language itself. As for the results, we highlight the need for research to deepen and complexify the concept of representation, which is widely mobilized in the field but often employed in a naturalized and insufficiently contextualized manner in analyses of textbooks and Indigenous themes. The analyzed volumes revealed the hegemony of a colonial historical and historiographical culture responsible for standardizing and rendering visible a certain model of representation, established through negotiations among multiple agents who regulate and institutionalize its formulation. The critical use of Indigenous literature and thought proved to be a fruitful path, capable of shifting research from a necessary yet limited critique of textbooks toward the construction of a more robust theoretical-methodological repertoire, aligned with alternative representations, memory politics, and symbolic universes produced and led by Indigenous peoples themselves. | |
