| dc.description.abstract2 | Gherkin (Cucumis anguria L.) is a vegetable of African origin, widely cultivated in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. Introduced from Africa by slaves, it was reserved throughout America and the world. However, the growth and productivity of gherkin plants can be significantly affected by salinity. Salinity is an abiotic factor that limits plant development, as it alters the osmotic potential, resulting in a reduction in water consumption by plants and, consequently, nutrients, which leads to a decrease in production. The objective of this work is to evaluate the growth of two gherkin cultivars subjected to saline stress conditions. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse located in the experimental area of the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences at the Universidade Federal Rural do Semiárido (DCAF/UFERSA), in Mossoró, RN, Brazil. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, in a 2 × 3 factorial scheme, with four replications. The treatments were composed of two gherkin cultivars (Norte and Liso) and three levels of electrical conductivity (ECa) (0,5, 2,75 and 5,0 dS m−1). Variations in height, stem diameter, number of total fruits, and dry matter of aerial parts and roots were confirmed. The results indicated that plant height and stem diameter decreased with increasing salinity, and that lower salinity resulted in a greater number of fruits and dry matter. The Norte cultivar performed better than Liso in terms of dry matter. It is concluded that the salinity of supervisory water significantly impacts gherkin productivity, highlighting the need to develop management strategies and select varieties that are more tol- erant to salinity to improve production in affected regions. | |
